Homework:
Student homework: Give green registration folder to your parents.
Parent homework this week. Please return the registration forms by Friday. Keep in mind that the green media permission only needs to be returned if you don't want your child's photo used in various media.
Language Arts: We began reviewing the terms for our study of the elements of literature. We related these terms to popular novels students have read in the past. Examples: Harry Potter is a protagonist. The Setting for the Hunger Games is in the future.
Math: We talked about how to use diagrams to help explain fractional values. We also did some computation practice and assessment.
Social Studies: Students shared information about their diverse backgrounds as they relate to Social Studies. Students shared where they were from and we located those places on the maps. Students also shared some aspects of their cultures. We have students in this class whose families come from: Thailand, Kenya, Vietnam, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, and Germany. Please let me know if I am missing anyone.
Our first unit will be a review of map skills. In 6th grade we will focus on Latin America and Canada. We always enjoy having guest speakers come to share their knowledge. Please let me know if you have experiences living in any of these areas and if you are interested in presenting at some point during the year.
We had a school-wide assembly today to celebrate the beginning of a new year. Ask your child for details.
